Can you lose money with a trading bot?

Updated October 16, 2026

Yes. Trading bots lose money often, especially when markets change, settings are too risky, or fees pile up. Some styles, like martingale, can drain an account in one bad move. Always set a stop loss and max drawdown, start small, and never fund a bot with money you need.

A bot does what it is told, even when that is a bad idea. It will not stop on its own when the market turns.

Fees and spreads add up, especially with bots that trade many times a day.

Watch the drawdown number. It shows the biggest drop from a high, and it tells you how painful the bad times get.
