What's the difference between passive and nonpassive income?

Updated October 30, 2026

Passive income is money you earn without doing regular, active work to keep it coming in, like rental income or dividends. Nonpassive income (also called active income) comes from work you do directly, like a job or a side hustle you run day to day. The line matters most for taxes.

Passive income is cash that keeps coming in without you clocking in every day for it. Think rental payments, dividends from stocks, or royalties. You still had to set it up, but once it's running you're not actively trading your hours for it.

Nonpassive income, sometimes called active income, is tied directly to work you're doing right now. Your job, a side hustle where you're the one doing the tasks, or a business you manage hands on all count as nonpassive. If you stop showing up, the money usually stops too.

The split matters most for taxes, since passive and nonpassive income can get treated differently depending on where you live, so it's worth checking with a tax professional instead of guessing. It also matters for expectations: nothing is fully passive from day one, and even hands free tools like trading bots still carry real risk and need some setup and checking in from you.

Questions people ask

Is money from a side hustle passive or nonpassive?

Most side hustles are nonpassive, since you're trading your own time and effort for the money. It only shifts toward passive once you've built something that keeps earning without you doing the day to day work.

Does an AI trading bot count as passive income?

It leans passive since the bot handles the trading, but it's not fully hands off and it's not risk free. You still pick the settings, watch for problems, and can lose money, so there's no sure amount coming in.
