For options, the most useful indicators combine price direction with volatility. Beginners usually start with implied volatility (IV) rank, RSI for overbought or oversold, moving averages for trend, Bollinger Bands for range and open interest for where traders are positioned. No indicator predicts the move; they help you pick which option to buy or sell.
Updated
| Indicator | What it shows | Default setting | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| IV rank | If options are cheap or pricey vs the past year | 52 weeks | Choosing to buy or sell options |
| RSI | Momentum, overbought or oversold | 14 periods | Timing entries |
| Moving averages | Trend direction | 50 and 200 periods | Picking calls vs puts |
| Bollinger Bands | Range and volatility squeeze | 20 periods, 2 std dev | Spotting breakouts |
| Open interest | Open contracts at each strike | None | Seeing crowded strikes |
Why Volatility Matters More in Options
An option's price includes implied volatility, so you can be right on direction and still lose if IV drops.
This is called IV crush and it often hits right after earnings. IV rank tells you if volatility is high or low against its own past year.
RSI and Moving Averages for Direction
Use moving averages for the trend and RSI for timing inside that trend.
Price above the 50 and 200 day averages favours calls. An RSI under 30 in an uptrend can mark a pullback entry.
Bollinger Bands for Breakouts
When the bands squeeze tight, a bigger move often follows, though not the direction.
Some traders buy straddles in a squeeze for that reason. Time decay works against you while you wait.
A Simple 3 Indicator Setup
Pick one trend tool, one timing tool and one volatility tool so they don't repeat each other.
Stacking 5 momentum indicators only shows the same signal 5 times.
- 50 day moving average for trend
- RSI 14 for timing
- IV rank to choose buy or sell

Questions people ask
What is the single best indicator for options?
There isn't one. IV rank is the most options specific, because it tells you whether options are cheap or expensive right now.
Do indicators work on 0DTE options?
They can help with timing, but same day options move very fast and decay quickly. Losses can be total, so size small.
Can I use these indicators on TradingView?
Yes. RSI, moving averages and Bollinger Bands are built into TradingView. IV data usually comes from your broker's options chain.
