Futures vs Options
Updated October 25, 2026
Futures lock you into buying or selling at a set price. Options give you the right but not the duty, so your loss as a buyer is capped at what you paid.
A futures contract is a deal to trade something at a set price on a set date. Gains and losses move one for one with the price.
An option gives you the choice to buy or sell at a set price. If you buy an option, the most you can lose is the price you paid for it.
Options have more moving parts like time decay, so they take longer to learn. Futures are simpler but can lose more than you put in if you're careless.
| Futures | Options | |
|---|---|---|
| Obligation | Yes, you must settle | Buyer has a choice |
| Max loss for buyer | Can exceed deposit | The premium paid |
| Complexity | Moderate | High |
| Time decay | No | Yes |
| Startup cost | Medium | Low to medium |
| Skill needed | Moderate | High |
Which one should you pick?
Futures suit people who want simple price exposure and can manage risk tightly. Options suit people willing to learn the extra rules for capped risk on buys. Total beginners may want to learn the basics elsewhere first.
