Network Marketing vs Affiliate Marketing

Updated October 16, 2026

Network marketing pays on your sales plus your team's sales. Affiliate marketing pays only on your own referrals. MLM can grow bigger, affiliate is simpler.

Network marketing, or MLM, lets you earn from your own sales and from people you bring onto your team. Building a team is the main way to grow.

Affiliate marketing pays you a commission when someone buys through your link. There's no team and usually no fees to join.

Both can work online and faceless if you build content that brings people to you. Pick companies with real products and fair terms, and avoid anything that pushes you to buy stock.

Which one should you pick?

Affiliate marketing is the simpler, low cost start. Network marketing suits people who like helping others and want team income. Research the company and its payouts before joining.

Questions people ask

Is network marketing a scam?

Not all of it. Legit companies sell real products. Be careful with ones that focus only on recruiting.

Can I do both?

Yes, lots of people promote affiliate offers and one MLM side by side.

More questions people ask

What's the difference between network marketing and a pyramid scheme?

Network marketing is a legal business model where people earn money by selling real products and building a team of other sellers. A pyramid scheme has no real product and just pays people for recruiting new members, which is illegal in most places. The simplest test is to ask where the money actually comes from, real sales to real customers, or just new people paying to join.

What's the difference between network marketing and MLM?

There isn't really a difference. Network marketing and MLM (multi level marketing) are two names for the same business model, selling products through a team of independent sellers who also recruit others. Some companies lean on the term network marketing since MLM picked up a bad reputation over the years, but the setup underneath is the same.
