What is Cash Flow?

Updated October 22, 2026

Cash flow is the money coming in minus the money going out over a period of time.

Positive cash flow means more comes in than goes out. That's the goal.

Lots of businesses fail not from no profit but from running out of cash.

Tracking your cash flow monthly shows where money leaks.

Example

You earn $3,000 and spend $2,600, so your monthly cash flow is $400.

Questions people ask

Is cash flow the same as profit?

Not exactly. Timing of payments matters for cash flow.

How can I improve it?
