How to remove collections from your credit report

Start by asking the collector to validate the debt. Then dispute anything inaccurate with the bureaus. If the debt is real, you can try to negotiate a deletion as part of paying it. Collections that stay fall off 7 years after the original delinquency.

Step 1: Validate the debt

Send a debt validation letter within 30 days of the collector first contacting you. They must show the debt is yours and the amount is right. Collectors buy old debts in bulk and the records are often thin.

Step 2: Dispute errors with the bureaus

Wrong balance, wrong dates, a debt that is not yours, or the same debt listed twice are all reasons to dispute. Anything the collector cannot verify should come off.

Step 3: Negotiate if the debt is real

Some collectors will agree to remove the account if you pay. Get any deal in writing before you send money. Newer scoring models ignore paid collections, so paying can help even without a deletion.

Medical collections

The three bureaus no longer report paid medical collections, or medical collections under $500. Check your report; many people still have ones that should be gone.
