Limit Order vs Market Order

Updated October 16, 2026

A market order fills right away at the current price. A limit order only fills at your price or better, so it may not fill at all.

A market order says buy or sell now at whatever the price is. It's fast, but in a fast market you can get a worse price than you saw, called slippage.

A limit order says only buy or sell at this price or better. You control the price, but if the market never reaches it, nothing happens.
