What is Overtrading?

Updated October 21, 2026

Overtrading is taking too many trades or too big trades, usually from boredom, greed or chasing losses.

It's one of the most common ways people lose money.

After a loss, the urge to win it back fast is strong. That's when accounts get hurt.

Bots don't get emotional, which is one reason people use them, but a badly set bot can overtrade too.

Example

After two losses you open five trades in an hour to make it back and lose more.

Questions people ask

How do I stop overtrading?

Set a max number of trades and a daily loss limit.

Is it a strategy problem?

Usually it's a discipline problem.
