A goodwill letter to remove a late payment asks your lender, as a courtesy, to change an accurate late mark on your account. Name the account and month, explain the cause, show your clean record since then and state what you need. Lenders may say no, so keep expectations modest and stay polite.

Check whether a goodwill letter is the right tool

A goodwill letter is for accurate marks only. If you actually paid on time, or the month shown is incorrect, file a dispute instead, because a dispute triggers a duty to investigate. Compare your statements and bank records against each of your three reports first.

Goodwill requests make the most sense when a single payment slipped through and the rest of your history is strong. Remember that payment history is around 35% of a FICO score, and that a late payment can stay for up to seven years. A recent mark on a clean file is the one you most want reviewed. A mark six years old may be nearly done on its own.

Who to send it to

Addresses on bills usually lead to a payment processor, and that will not help. Look for the lender's customer relations or executive office address on its website or in its annual report. For a local bank or credit union, a branch manager or the lending department can be a good first contact. For student loans and auto loans, ask the servicer's customer service team where such requests go.

You could also call first. Be brief and friendly, ask whether goodwill adjustments are ever considered and note the name of the person who helps you. Then mail or upload the letter and attach any paperwork, like a hospital discharge note with private details covered.

If the answer is no

Some banks have firm policies against goodwill changes and say they must report accurate data. A polite reply and a later retry are fine, and some people send a second letter after several more months of on time payments. Do not send daily requests or threaten anyone, as that only closes the door.

Another option on the table is asking the lender whether it would give a courtesy before the mark is reported, if you have just missed a payment by a few days. Most lenders do not report a payment as late until it is at least 30 days past due, so paying right away may prevent it altogether.

Whatever the result, keep building. A late payment gets less weight as it ages and as newer on time payments stack up.

Questions people ask

Should you offer anything in return?

Autopay enrollment is a reasonable offer that shows the cause has been fixed. Avoid offering money, which could look like an attempt to buy a change.

Can you ask for several late payments to be removed?

You can, but the odds fall as the number rises, and these letters work best for isolated events.

How will you know it worked?

The lender may send a letter, but always check your reports. Updates usually appear within one or two reporting cycles.
