What is Take Profit?

Updated October 17, 2026

A take profit is an order that closes your trade automatically once it reaches a profit target.

Take profit lets you lock in gains without staring at the chart. Set it and walk away.

It also stops greed from turning a winner into a loser.

Bots use take profit levels all the time. Pairing a sensible take profit with a stop loss gives you a clear risk to reward.

Example

You buy gold at 2,400 with a take profit at 2,420. When price touches 2,420 the trade closes in profit.

Questions people ask

Should I always use take profit?

Many traders do. Others use trailing stops to let winners run.

Can price hit near my target and reverse?

Yes, which is why some people take partial profits on the way.
